Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos
So you’re dreaming about Grand Turk but aren’t quite sure what to expect — or even how to get there? Don’t worry… I’ve got you covered!
When most people think of Turks & Caicos, they’re usually picturing Providenciales (Provo). But Grand Turk is its own hidden gem: it’s the second most populated island in the chain, home to the capital, Cockburn Town, and has the only cruise port in the country. It’s laid-back, beautiful, and full of charm — complete with wild donkeys roaming the beaches and streets like they own the place (because, honestly, they kind of do!).
Fun Fact: Grand Turk was the first piece of land astronaut John Glenn reached after his Mercury space mission in 1962. It’s also believed by many historians to be the first landfall of Christopher Columbus in the Americas. Pretty cool for such a tiny, chill island!
✈️ How to Get There
If you’re lucky enough to have Grand Turk on your cruise itinerary, that’s a great way to get a quick taste of the island — but trust me, you’ll probably want to come back for a longer stay!
Here’s the thing: there’s no public ferry, and international flights don’t usually land on Grand Turk. While there areoccasional direct flights from Miami, most people fly into Providenciales (PLS) first, then hop on a short domestic flight to Grand Turk with Caicos Express Airways or interCaribbean.
My tip? Book with Caicos Express. When planning our trip, I came across a lot of stories about interCaribbean flights being delayed or cancelled, and we didn’t want to risk it. Caicos Express was smooth and reliable — and the flight itself is just about 30 minutes. Just be prepared: the planes are tiny, but the views are incredible!
✈️ Hot Tips for the Domestic Flight
When you land at Providenciales, here’s where it gets a little confusing — but don’t worry, I’ll help you avoid our rookie mistakes:
✔️ After you exit arrivals, you need to walk outside and head right, then follow the building around to the front to get to departures.
✔️ The domestic check-in area is a bit hidden — when you’re inside, keep walking all the way left past the main international counters until you see Domestic Check-In.
✔️ The domestic terminal is tiny, with a small security area. There’s no food or restrooms once you’re through security, so don’t go in until you’re really ready to board!
🛩️ The Small Plane Adventure
This part was honestly one of my favorite memories of the trip. When your flight is called, you’ll walk right out onto the runway — island style! We kept passing smaller and smaller planes, telling ourselves, “That one’s not too small… we can do this!” Until we finally reached ours: an 8-seater where your luggage rides practically in your lap. Tight? Definitely. Worth it? Absolutely.
The upside of a tiny plane: the views are unbelievable. You’ll stay low enough to watch the gorgeous turquoise water, scattered cays, and coral reefs the whole way. And that landing — seeing the island appear through the cockpit windows — is something you don’t get on a big jet!
After a short 25-minute flight, you’ll land at JAGS McCartney International airport but don’t worry- the airport is small and easy to navigate. Our bags were literally the only ones on the belt so we were quickly off on our way.
We pre-arranged a taxi with Miss Hyacinth, and I can’t recommend her enough. She was waiting for us when we landed, shared fun local facts during the ride, and was on call for us all week — even stopping at the grocery store on the way to our rental so we could grab essentials. If you need a taxi, look for her first! Message me for her contact information.
Note: The planes will be different depending on when you fly out. Our flight back fit about 18 people but it was so tight and there wasn’t enough head room height to even walk down the aisle without bending down. I actually felt claustrophobic and much preferred the previous flight we took. Even though this one was slightly bigger, it was less comfortable to me.

Where to Stay in Grand Turk 🏝️
🐚 Reef House — Beachfront Bliss
We stayed at the Reef House on Ocean Drive, and honestly, it was the perfect home base for a relaxing week on the island. It slept 6 of us perfectly and this gorgeous beachfront spot has everything you need: kayaks, life vests, floats, beach towels — you name it. Most days, we were either on the beach right in front of the house or lounging on our covered porch, soaking up endless views of the ocean’s dreamy shades of blue and green.
The location is super convenient too — you’re close to a few little souvenir shops that open when cruise ships are in port, and within a 20-minute walk of great restaurants on the idyllic Duke Street.
There’s also a small grocery store and liquor store nearby. Just a heads up: if you’ve visited Providenciales (Provo) before, you’ll notice the grocery selection on Grand Turk is more limited — fewer prepared foods, less alcohol in the stores themselves — so plan to make an extra stop at the liquor store if you want to stock up for the week.
Things to Do in Grand Turk 🌴🐬
Grand Turk is wonderfully laid-back — the whole vibe here is to slow down, unwind, and limin (that’s island slang for just chilling out and doing absolutely nothing — highly recommended!). But if you’re up for a little adventure between naps on the beach, here are a few things you shouldn’t miss:
🏎️ 1. Rent a Golf Cart and Explore the Island
This island is tiny — just 6.9 miles long and about 1.5 miles wide — so it’s easy (and super fun) to see it all in a day with a golf cart. Cruise along the coast, discover quiet beaches like Pilroy and White Sands, and stop at the lighthouse for the views. It’s the best way to feel like you’re on your own little island safari!
🗼 2. Visit the Grand Turk Lighthouse
This historic lighthouse sits at the island’s
northern tip and is a must for photos
and sweeping ocean views. Just double-check the hours — when we went, it closed at 5 PM. There is also a tram (Great Salt Tram Tour) leaving from the
cruise terminal that takes you to various spots around the island.
🏖️ 3. Spend a Day at Governor’s Beach
Governor’s Beach is one of the prettiest spots on the island — soft sand, calm clear water, and plenty of space to spread out. You can rent two chairs and an umbrella for about $25, and there’s food and restrooms on site too. It’s clean, beautiful, and easy to spend the whole day there.
🧭 4. Take a Day Trip to Salt Cay
If you’re feeling adventurous, hop on the ferry to Salt Cay — it’s only about $15 round trip, but keep in mind it only runs a few days a week.
🐠 5. Swim with Wild Stingrays at Gibbs Cay
While I didn’t get to do this on my trip it was recommended to take a boat tour to Gibbs Cay, a deserted island just offshore, where you can wade into shallow turquoise water and swim with gentle wild stingrays. It’s safe, fun, and one of those “only in the islands” moments you’ll talk about for years.
✨ My advice: Do a little, relax a lot — that’s the Grand Turk way!

Where to Eat in Grand Turk 🍹🌴
✨ Hire a Personal Chef — It’s So Worth It!
If you really want to make your trip unforgettable, I highly recommend hiring a local chef. We were lucky enough to have Jameka from Fisherman’s Wife cook for us one night to celebrate our friend’s 50th birthday — and honestly,it was the best meal of the entire week.
Jameka was warm, accommodating, and ready to whip up whatever we were craving. Every bite was incredible, and having a private dinner at our rental made the night so special. If you’re celebrating something (or just want to treat yourself!), do this
🌮 The Taco Bar — A Must!
You’ll find this amazing lunch spot across the street from the Turks Head Inn on the beach. This spot was such a hit we went back twice! Casual, fun, and tasty — if you’re craving tacos and good vibes, don’t skip it.
🌿 Turks Head Inne — So Charming!
This might be the island’s best-kept secret. Picture a cozy garden courtyard strung with twinkling lights — it felt like being transported to Charleston or New Orleans. This was our group’s favorite meal (besides Jameka’s, of course). Definitely try the almond snapper, and know that the drinks are nice and strong!
🌴 Osprey Beach Hotel Restaurant
Osprey is super cute — think breezy poolside tables right by the ocean. I’d recommend timing your visit for their Saturday BBQ night; we missed it and went on a quieter day when the menu was limited. The piña coladas were delicious, and our server was lovely, but overall this was probably our least memorable meal. Go on BBQ night if you can!
🐟 Barbie’s Restaurant
Barbie’s was just down the road from our place — super convenient for a quick bite. The menu leans heavily on fried food, and like many places on the island, it’s a bit pricey for what you get. That said, our friends loved the fish nuggets, so it’s worth a try if you’re nearby.
🌺 Secret Garden Restaurant
Secret Garden was fine but didn’t really stand out for us. It’s cute set inside the gardens of the Salt Raker Inn but skippable if you’re short on time.
🍮 Fisherman’s Wife Restaurant — Save Room for Dessert!
One last tip: don’t miss dessert at Fisherman’s Wife. We popped in just for their Malva Pudding (a dreamy South African dessert — kind of like sticky toffee pudding) and it was so good. Next time, we’d definitely come back for a full dinner too — especially after loving Jameka’s cooking so much. Plus, the restaurant itself is adorable inside.

Handy Tips for Visiting Grand Turk 🇹🇨✨
Here are a few things I wish I’d known before our trip — hope they help you make the most of your time on this beautiful little island!
🌴 Money & Plugs
Good news — the official currency is the U.S. Dollar, and they use standard U.S. plugs too. For US travelers there is no need for converters or currency exchange headaches!
🕒 Check Opening Hours
Many restaurants and shops close for a few hours between lunch and dinner — and some shops only open when cruise ships are docked. If you’re hoping to browse the souvenir spots along Front Street in Cockburn Town, check the cruise ship schedule first so you don’t miss out. A couple of stores (like Goldsmith, near Barbie’s restaurant) usually open even when ships aren’t in port.
💧 CPAP Travelers, Take Note
If you use a CPAP machine and need distilled water, bring it with you if possible — it was tricky to find on the island, even though we’d been told otherwise.
🚕 Getting Around
Taxis are super easy. We loved riding with Hyacinth (highly recommend!) and also used Jack and Kathy’s — both were reliable and friendly. For getting around on your own, we rented a golf cart from Max — it was perfect for exploring at our own pace. Message me for additional information on how to contact Hyacinth.
🐴 Say Hi to the Donkeys!
One of Grand Turk’s most charming surprises? The wild donkeys! They’ve roamed the island for years, ever since they were set free after the salt mines shut down. They’re gentle, friendly, and love a snack — bring an apple or some carrots if you want to make a donkey friend. They’re part of what makes Grand Turk feel so unique and special.

🌴 Stay on Charming Duke Street
If you’d rather be right in the heart of the island’s colorful charm, look into one of the many adorable inns or guesthouses along Duke Street. It’s a quiet, tree-lined street with pastel cottages and plenty of great restaurants just steps away. Most spots here aren’t directly on the beach, but you aren’t too far away and can rent a golf cart to make it easier.
✨ Whether you stay right on the sand or tucked away under the palms, Grand Turk is all about laid-back island living. If you find a hidden gem, let me know — I love sharing new spots with fellow travelers! 🌺🏖️
🌴 Quick Stopover in Providenciales
We had about five hours to spare between landing from Grand Turk and catching our international flight home — so instead of sitting at the airport, we made the best of it with a mini adventure on Provo!
We grabbed a taxi and headed straight to Las Brisas, a gorgeous restaurant perched right on the edge of stunning Chalk Sound. If you’ve never seen Chalk Sound, you have to add it to your list — it’s like looking at a postcard come to life, but with water that’s the most unbelievable milky blue. Pictures just don’t do it justice! Last time I was here we rented kayaks so if that’s available and you have time, this is a great activity.
Las Brisas is the perfect place to sip a cocktail and soak up those views. If you have extra time, walk down the road to one of my favorite beaches on Provo — Sapodilla Bay. You can rent a beach chair, grab a cold drink or snack from the local vendors, and wade out into some of the calmest, clearest water you’ll ever see. Sapodilla is so shallow that you can walk out for what feels like forever and still only be knee-deep. It’s the perfect, peaceful send-off before heading back to the airport feeling sun-kissed and totally relaxed.

🌊✨ Final Thoughts: Why Grand Turk is Worth It
Grand Turk may be tiny, but its charm and peaceful way of life more than makes up for it. Here, life slows down — you trade busy crowds for quiet beaches, and shopping sprees for sunset strolls and ocean swims. Whether you’re feeding wild donkeys, kayaking off your rental’s beach, or floating in crystal-clear water without another soul in sight — this island reminds you how good it feels to just be. Plus Grand Turk residents aresome of the most friendliest people. We felt welcomed and safe and throughouly enjoyed our escape to paradise.
I hope my tips help you plan the kind of peaceful island escape that stays with you long after your tan fades.
